Three Things I Learned

| November 2, 2016 | Reply

On Friday myself and Miles Tredwell (he of Syndicate fame) gave a talk at an event in London called A Bet Worth Making.

It’s an event I invited you all to and, if you weren’t able to attend for whatever reason, then fear not because there will be a recording of the day going on sale in the not too distant future.

Today though I wanted to share with you three things that I learned from the event:

  1. When it comes to matched betting I certainly don’t know it all and I picked up one excellent tip.

I wrote a very popular article on keeping betting accounts open back in 2014 (you can read it here) but one tip I didn’t include, as it had never even occurred to me, was the following…

If you are taking advantage of a bookie promotion use a larger (or smaller) amount than the maximum free bet stake – so if it’s bet £25, get a £25 free bet, instead of betting £25 you should bet £30 or £35…

Reason being, a sequence of £25 bets at one bookmaker will be very easy to spot for anybody taking a quick look at your account – they’ll see the pattern, realise that they are bets on promotional markets and quickly put a stop to it.

However, if your account is more like £30, £35, £25, £20, £35, anybody taking a cursory glance (which will more than likely be all they do given the huge number of accounts in front of them) will be far more likely to pass your account over…

That piece of advice, by the way, comes from a discussion with an actual bookmaker.

  1. Two under the radar trainers that you can back blindly for a profit and one that you can back blindly for a profit away from the big meetings.

Flat racing isn’t my game but it’s certainly the game of a couple of the speakers at the event and one of them gave out the names of three trainers to follow who I had, in all honesty, never heard of.

I’ll not give them out here (that’s for attendees and those who purchase the recording) but their stats really do make for interesting reading – these aren’t records over the last few weeks but rather the last few years.

  1. You Betting Rant readers are a wonderful bunch!

Lastly I just wanted to say thanks if you did attend, as it was a genuine pleasure to meet you.

Everybody to a man (and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it really was all men) was engaging, realistic in their goals and willing to listen.

The fact is that you CAN make a long term income from betting but if you’re not realistic about what it takes and you’re not prepared to listen to advice then you’ll almost certainly end up as just another mug punter who lurches from system to system with no clear plan, betting big on the bad ones and ducking out of the good ones at the first sign of trouble.

Happily none of the people I spoke to on Friday were like that and all were more than willing to put in the work it takes to achieve success – one Betting Rant reader came all the way from Zurich to take part and another reader and Syndicate member came from Brazil!!

So thanks again if you did come and, if not, do look out for that recording, which will hopefully be available next week.
