Brief Summary:

Daily tips on UK flat and all-weather racing selected using their “special” formula. Tips are advised between one and three points and are all to win to Betfair SP. E-mails are received each morning, usually between 09:00 and 11:00.

How Much Money Do I Need to Get Started?

A 100-point starting bank is recommended in the FAQ’s for this service, but the detail page on the web site states a 250-point bank should be used. We have used 100-points for the purposes of the review as 250 points sounds excessive given the staking plan and historic results.

How Much Money Can I Make?

No specific claims. However, the web site boasts average monthly profits of 11.93 points since September 2015, with an ROI (Return on Investment) of 16%.

How Much Time Will I Need to Make This Work?

Just a couple of minutes daily when the tips are received. Because they are to Betfair SP there is no time spent searching for the best odds across multiple bookmakers.

Will I Need Any Equipment to Do This?

A laptop, PC or mobile device with internet access and a Betfair exchange account.

Value for Money?

At £14.95 per month this service is at the lower cost end of the market. Whether it is still value for money we will decide at the end of the review period. After a promising start this service fell away badly in Months 2 and 3, and on that basis we cannot award a VFM pass based on our review.

Quality of Customer Service?

Part of the Tipster Street stable of tipsters and benefits from the infrastructure that comes from that. My communication with the owner Neil has always been very professional and timely. When I have used the support link through the web site I have always received a prompt and helpful response.

Review

The Professor’s Formula is another offering from the Tipster Street stable. Having joined the platform in September 2015 it has, according to the web site, delivered 405.69 points profit at an average of 11.93 points per month. There is a complete run down of the results on the site, which is then analysed by month as well. According to these historic figures there have been some big winning months (171.43 points in June 2016 and 129.42 points in December 2017), although there have been some fairly substantial losing months as well (45.33 points in March 2018, 43.66 points in December 2016 and 41.77 points in February 2017).

Tips are sent daily by e-mail, usually before eleven o’clock each morning, with “no bet” days being advised accordingly. Selections are made using The Professor’s “secret” formula and are all win bets to Betfair SP. Staking is based on a scale of one to three points per bet. Although the web site indicates that there will be on average 33 tips per month (or 24 if you look at the FAQ’s page), we saw 53 in the first month of the review.

The system is simple and straightforward to follow. The e-mail is clear and concise, although no rationale is given for the selections, so if you like that element from a service then you will be left disappointed with this one. A reminder of the staking plan is given on each e-mail which is a nice touch, especially if you follow multiple tipsters in a portfolio.

Results – Month 1 (18th June to 17th July 2018)

There were more selections in the month than we had been led to believe there would be, with 53 tips seen in the period. Of those, 17 were successful, giving a strike rate of 32.08%, which is above the historic figure of 29% mentioned on the website.

The 17 winners generated a profit for the month of 15.5 points. This is a great start to the review period, but could have been so much better. At one point in the period we were sitting on 57.11 points of profit, before a run of 10 consecutive losing tips knocked us back. There was also a losing sequence of eight earlier in the month.

The highlight undoubtedly came early in the month when Monarch’s Glen was tipped at Ascot as a maximum three-point bet, duly obliging at a BSP of 12.93.

Average odds of all selections for the month were 14.92, with the average odds of the winning selections being just 3.6.

The Return on Investment in the period was 12.01%, which is slightly behind the lifetime average noted on the website.

Results – Month 2 (18th July to 17th August 2018)

This month started brightly, and 14 winners from the first 21 selections saw us sitting on a further 34.57 points of profit. However, this was followed by a run of 15 consecutive losers which wiped out the profit and took us into a loss for the month. With just six more winners in the final 17 selections of the month we ended the period with a loss of 11.99 points. It could have been so much worse had the final selection of the period, Dazzling Rock at Chelmsford, not secured a maximum points win at odds of 5.71!

The final analysis for Month 2 was 20 winners from 53 selections, a strike rate of 37.74%. Although this strike rate was better than the first month, the overall profitability was affected by two factors:

  • The average odds of the winning selections in Month 2 was just 2.78 (c.7/4), compared to 3.6 (over 5/2) the previous month.
  • The average stake on losing selections in Month 2 was quarter of a point higher than in Month 1.

At the end of two months we are still just in profit at 3.51 points, thanks to Dazzling Rock pulling us back from an overall loss. However, if you were staking at £10 per point you would still actually only be around breakeven after deducting the two months’ membership fees.

Results – Month 3 (18th August to 17th September 2018)

This proved to be a very difficult month for The Professor’s Formula, with two losing sequences of 10 selections and an overall strike rate of 25%, well down on the previous two months. Approaching the end of the month we were sat on a loss of 76.3 points for the period, and only four out of five winners on 15th September for a daily profit of 21.81 points clawed back any crumb of comfort.

The average odds of the winning selections in this period was only 2.3 (just over 5/4). This compares to 3.6 and 2.78 in the previous months, and combined with the downturn in the strike rate, provides the explanation behind the poor monthly result.

Over the course of the three-months trial we have seen a total loss of  54.84 points (plus the cost of the membership). There were 50 winners from 158 selections, a strike rate of 31.65%. Although the average odds of all selections given was 16.32 (over 15/1), the average odds of the winning selections was down at 2.94 (les than 2/1).

Summary at End of Month 1

Ultimately a great start to the review period, with profit in excess of the historic average. However, the ups and downs within the month would seem to be a cameo of the overall profile of this tipster. Looking forward to seeing if Month 2 can follow up on this start.

Summary at end of Month 2

The ups and downs associated with this service, which we have mentioned several times in the review, were a real feature of the second month. A fantastic start to the period was more than wiped out by a poor end and overall we are pretty much back where we started. It will be interesting to see where the final month of the review finishes.

Summary at end of Month 3

After a bright start, we saw an accelerating decline in months 2 and 3 and ended the review period with a total loss of 54.84 points. Based on our review we can only award The Professor’s Formula a one-star rating.
