When you sign up the first 14 days are free and then you can choose £29.99 per month, £79.99 per quarter (an 11% saving) or £299.99 annually, a saving of 16.6% over 12 individual monthly payments.

Money Back Guarantee:

Yes, a 14-day unconditional guarantee is offered. Although the first 14 days are available for free anyway, and there’s nothing to suggest the guarantee starts at the commencement of the full fee period.

What Do You Get?

Win and each way singles on UK and Irish racing, delivered by email on the morning of racing.

Where to Buy:

How Much Money Do I Need to Get Started?

A betting bank of 100 points is recommended by this service.

How Much Money Can I Make?

The website shows an historic profit of £801.80 to £10 stakes since the service started in March 2018. This equates to around nine points per month on average.

How Much Time Will I Need to Make This Work?

This is a simple win and each way singles service, and without any complicated bets or staking plans to follow it takes just minutes when the tips are received. Normally there are between one and three tips per day.

Will I Need Any Equipment to Do This?

A laptop, PC, tablet or smartphone with internet connectivity and access to online bookmaker accounts will suffice. Alternatively, a quick walk to the local bookies is also a possibility, although you lose the ability to hunt out the best odds this way.

Value for Money?

Too early for a definitive comment and I will wait until the end of the review before offering an opinion. A loss of 25.94 points before taking into account the cost of the subscription means we are unable to award a VFM pass for Star Horse Tips based on the review period.

Quality of Customer Service?

Although I haven’t had to contact customer support during the review so far, my dealings with them when setting up the trial were handled in a professional and courteous manner. The website suggests 24/7 support is available, but I think it more likely that emails sent out of hours will be dealt with the next day.

Star Horse Tips is a relative newcomer to the Sports Betting Stars ranks, having only commenced his service as a paid for offering in March this year. In the nine months to the end of November 2018 there is a monthly results summary which shows £802 profit to £10 stakes and just one losing month. Although it is indicated that the results are proofed to Racing Proofing, I couldn’t actually find the service on their website and so cannot confirm the recorded results.

The service uses mainly one-point win singles, although there are occasional each way selections and also sporadic two-point recommended stakes. There are between one and three tips per day (excluding Sundays which are often “no bet” days) and the advice email usually arrives between 10:00 and 12:30 on the morning of racing.

The email itself is clear and concise, giving the race time and track, selection name, advised odds, bookmakers offering those odds and the recommended stake. There is no write up or analysis of the selections, so if you like some detail behind the picks this won’t be for you.

The email tends to arrive when the markets are quite well formed and settled and consequently the advised prices are generally always available.

Overall, this is a simple, easy to follow service and it will stand or fall on its results alone. So, let’s take a look at the performance during the review.

Results – Month 1 (22nd November to 21st December 2018)

After starting the review period with five straight losses Star Horse Tips never managed to regain profitability, although it plateaued around the five to seven-point loss mark until a run of 14 losers and then another sequence of 12 the other side of the winner saw the loss for the month climb to a final position of -23.25 points.

With just six winners from the 52 selections this month the strike rate was down at a disappointing 11.54%, especially when you consider the average odds of the selections was 5.5 (9/2). The average odds of the winning selections were a full point lower still at 7/2 (4.5).

The four each way selections in the period yielded just one small place return.

Obviously, this is a million miles away from what we expected to see given the historic performance claims. However, those of you who know me well will know that I never see a single month’s results as any sort of indication of a tipster’s overall ability. What I will be looking for in the next two months though is the ability to ride out this dip and begin to claw back the losses.

Results – Month 2 (22nd December 2018 to 21st January 2019)

A slightly better month this time around, with the same number of winners (six) but from 11 less bets. The average odds of the winning selections was also higher at 5.89 (just under 5/1), compared 4.5 (7/2) last month. However, this still wasn’t quite enough to breakeven and we saw a further 2.88 points added to the cumulative loss, which now stands at 26.13 points after two months.

The longest losing sequence this month was eight, but that came at a time when we were sitting almost nine points in profit for the period and when there was no time to recover before the month closed on the small loss.

The twelve each way selections in the period produced one winner and five places to all but breakeven (actual loss of 0.22 points).

The losses are increased further by the monthly subscription fees, although the service is still well within its betting bank of 100-points, even with the subscription costs added.

Results – Month 3 (22nd January to 21st February 2019)

The third and final month of the review finally managed to deliver a profit, albeit one of just 0.19 points! Just over halfway through the month we were sitting on a profit of 15.75 points after six winners in the first 19 bets of the period. Unfortunately, the remaining 16 bets of the month delivered just one placed selection and all but wiped out that profit. The final cumulative loss for the three months of the review was, therefore, 25.94 points.

Once again we had six winners in the month, the same as the two previous months. Despite the average odds of the winners being around half-a-point lower than last month at 5.33 (just under 9/2), this month was a tiny profit compared to the small loss last month. This was on the back of less overall selections (35 compared to 41), which in turn was a result of the loss of six days racing following the equine flu scare.

Once again there were 12 each way selections in the month, but this time they accounted for a loss of 3.31 points (one winner and two placed).

The month was obviously still a net loss after the cost of the subscription (unless you were using over £158 per point!). At £10 per point stakes the net loss for the whole of the review period amounts to £349.37 (including £89.97 of subscription fees).

Summary at End of Month 1

A disappointing start to the review period, but it is only one month, and we wait to see what the remainder of the trial brings.

Summary at End of Month 2

Although this month was an improvement on the first, it still fell short of breakeven, and there will need to be a significant turnaround in the final month of the review to get anywhere near recovering the losses incurred to date.

Summary at End of Month 3

The third month showed a further improvement, and it is not inconceivable that a fourth month might show further improvement still, and that is the main drawback of “snapshot” reviews. That said, there is a significant shortfall to be recovered now to get back to the historic monthly average profits claimed.
