Ice Diamond

How Much Money Do I Need to Get Started?

The recommended starting bank is 250-points. However, if you add together the recommended banks of the four individual services that comprise Ice Diamond the bank should be 600-points.

How Much Money Can I Make?

The Betfan website claims 960.14 points profit in the six months between January and June 2019, an average of 160-points per month.

How Much Time Will I Need to Make This Work?

Effectively this is a portfolio of four individual services and so there are now four emails each day (split between the evening before racing or on the morning of racing). None of the services are overly heavy in terms of the number of selections each day, nor are there any complicated staking plans to follow, so a maximum of 5-10 minutes for each should suffice.

Will I Need Any Equipment to Do This?

The standard fare of a laptop, PC, tablet or smart phone with internet connectivity and access to a range of online bookmaker accounts is recommended.

Value for Money?

This will be assessed at the end of the review rather than the start. At £120 every 28 days this is definitely at the top end of the market. Whilst it gives accress to a readymade portfolio, the components are fixed by Betfan and the make up may not suit everybody. With a bank drawdown of around 75% after three months, including the cost of the subscription, I cannot award this service a VFM pass based on the review period.

Quality of Customer Service?

Has the backing and support of the Betfan platform. Requests for support are made via the support ticket system on the website. I have always received a quick and professional response when using the Betfan support system to set up reviews.

Review
ICE Diamond is a new concept from the Betfan platform of tipsters. Standing for “Inner Circle Edge”, ICE Diamond brings together four of Betfan’s preeminent services into one combined offering. The management team at Betfan have used their knowledge and experience of different services to create a portfolio that individual punters would rarely have the time or the money to create for themselves.

The original contributors to ICE Diamond were High Five, Race To Win, Two Percent Club and High Roller, together bringing over a century of tipping experience to the table. However, in August Two Percent Club was replaced by RaceFan as a contributor to the portfolio.

The cost of joining ICE Diamond might at first appear to be quite an expensive option. But when you consider the combined individual costs of the four services the savings are actually hugely significant. The comparable costs, and the savings, inclusive of VAT, are as follows:

Monthly (every 28 days) – Ice Diamond £119.99, individual costs £180.00, saving £60.01
Quarterly (every 90 days) – Ice Diamond £337.20, individual costs £504.60, saving £167.40
Six monthly – Ice Diamond £571.20, individual costs £855.60, saving £284.40

That’s a third off the combined individual prices for any of the membership options.

Initially there was a single daily email with all four tipsters’ selections which arrived before 10:00 each morning. However, waiting for all four contributors to be finalised before sending the tips out meant that the prices for the services which go out the night before had been missed. Now a separate email is sent for each individual contributor as soon as they are ready. The tips are also available in the members’ area of the website and on the Betfan app. The email is in the standard Betfan format, providing all of the relevant information for each bet including one bookmaker offering the advised price. As an added extra, the racing colours of each horse are shown alongside the selection, providing a useful aid if you’re watching the races.

The stakes are as per each individual tipster and can range from one to five points. However, where more than one of the contributors make a selection the stakes are combined. Initially, this was show as a single stake on the combined email but now involves placing multiple bets on the same selection, often with each element of the bet at different prices.

This concept has been in the proofing room at Betfan since January and there is a breakdown of the results on their website. These results show a profit of 960-points between January and June 2019, an average of 160-points per month.

Results – Month 1 (1st June to 30th June 2019)

With over 300 tips in the month there was no shortage of action from this readymade portfolio. The tips comprised 273 singles, two doubles and four Trixies (there were 23 non-runners in the month). The final result was a profit of 27.01 points.

Although the month started somewhat sluggishly reaching a low-point of a deficit of over 50-points, it recovered at one stage to a profit in excess of 50-points. Although it fell from that high point back into deficit at one stage, there was a recovery towards the end of the month. The final day produced three winners at 13/2 (one-point, with a Rule 4 deduction), 8/1 (one-point) and 8/1 (three-points) to ensure the final profit of 27.01 points for the month.

As always, we do not include any best odds guaranteed returns, so it would be possible to exceed this amount if you are still lucky enough to receive that benefit.

Of the 273 singles, 52 were winners for a strike rate of 19.05%. Both of the doubles lost and only one of the Trixies made a positive return, and that was a mere 0.65 points.

The return on investment (ROI) for the month was 3.91% and the return on capital (ROC) 10.8%. However, when you take into account the £119.99 per month subscription fee the net ROI at £10 per point stakes is 2.14% and at £50 per point stakes 3.55%.

The stake per bet ranged form one-point to ten-points, the latter occurring where more than one contributor had tipped the same horse.

Results – Month 2 (1st July to 30th July 2019)

Another month with well over 300 tips, although the result this month was a loss of over 100-points. That more than wiped out the profit from the first month and left us with a cumulative loss of 81.33 points after two months.

This month’s profile was 307 singles, two doubles and two Trixies (with 16 selections being non-runners at the end of the day). Both of the doubles and both of the Trixies lost this month and the 45 single winners left us with a strike rate of under 15%.

During the month, BetFan stated that where two of the tipsters that comprise Ice Diamond tip the same horse, the result will be recorded on the basis of the first tip received. Now I find this a little odd, as one of the key pieces of advice when following a tipster is not to pick and choose the bets but ensure you follow every one. The approach adopted by BetFan means that if a tipster staking one-point tips up a horse at 4/1 before the tipster who stakes five-points and you only follow the first tip you will be missing out on 20-points profit. This situation is compounded by the different staking plans of the tipsters.

My personal feelings are that you need to follow all of the tips, and if that means doubling up on a selection then so be it. The attached results are recorded on that basis.

Results – Month 3 (31st July to 30th August 2019)

There were less tips this month (248) compared to the previous two and this will have been due, at least in part, to the replacement of Two Percent Club with RaceFan as a contributor to the service. Unfortunately, there was a further loss this month of 75.33 points, which leaves the overall deficit for the review period at 156.66 points.

The selections this month comprised 248 singles and just a solitary losing Trixie. The singles produced 45 winners, a strike rate of 18.15%, at average odds of 5.06 (just a shade over 4/1). Over the three months we have seen a strike rate of 17.15% at average win odds of 5.48 (just shy of 9/2).

The total loss over the three months has meant a drawdown on the recommended bank of just under 65%, although when you add in the not inconsiderable cost of the subscription that figure becomes closer to 75% at £10 per point stakes.

Summary at End of Month 1

A profit is a profit, but this was well down on the historic average and we hope to see a bigger return for the investment in the next two months.

Summary at End of Month 2

The loss this month means we now have a drawdown of roughly one-third of our starting bank. This is, of course, what betting banks are for – to ride out the difficult months, but another month like this would put the bank under pressure.

Summary at End of Month 3

The performance during the review has been disappointing and shows what can happen with a portfolio whose component parts are all underperforming at the same time. That said, it is still within its recommended bank and could see a significant turnaround if two or more of the services recover together.
