England World Cup Squad Revisited (12/1 Winner?)

| May 15, 2018 | Reply

Back in December I wrote this.

After watching England secure their place at the 2018 World Cup I tipped the following players to make the squad…

Fabian Delph @ 5/1 – Now biggest price 2/5

Jack Wilshere @ 5/1 – Now biggest price 4/9

Ruben Loftus-Cheek @ 12/1 – Now biggest price 1/2

Jamal Lascelles @ 25/1 – Now biggest price 33/1

Lascelles aside you’ll be sitting pretty if you took those bets (Southgate is due to announce his squad tomorrow) but I’m not bringing this up to brag…

Well, not entirely anyway…

Instead, I bring it up to make the point that you should never turn your nose up at ‘specials’ markets when you have some knowledge of the area.

It doesn’t matter whether its World Cup squads, next manager markets or even Eurovision winners, the bookies tend to put very little thought into these books, which means that there can be some outstanding value to be had.

One more World Cup wager

I’ve had another look at the ‘England World Cup Squad’ market today and, while the value has pretty much disappeared now, there is one final chink available for us to potentially exploit…

Everybody’s least favourite England midfielder – Jake Livermore.

Now, I don’t want Livermore in the squad, you don’t want Livermore in the squad, Livermore’s mum probably doesn’t want Livermore in the squad BUT he has been in the most recent England squad and in numerous Southgate squads before that…

Furthermore, those selections were when West Brom were bloody awful and, lately, they’ve actually been quite good, with Livermore netting the winner in their recent match with Tottenham.

I can’t help but feel that the current best price of 10/3 (Marathon) is based more on what people want to happen than what will actually happen…

After all, since Livermore made the last squad, England’s midfield options have decreased if anything, with Oxlade-Chamberlain ruled out of contention and Adam Lallana only just back from his latest knock.

I think he’s worth a few quid regardless but, if nothing else, it’s a must bet if you did put money on my Wilshere and Loftus-Cheek recommendations, as this will effectively act as a hedge (with a small chance of all three of them going).
