Do Not Bet On This Man

| July 18, 2011 | 11 Replies

There are often times when I feel like I’m banging my head against a brick wall…

I can live with this, after all, when you bet and provide tips for a living it’s an occupational hazard.

There are the people that know nothing about betting but insist on telling you that it’s impossible to beat the bookies…

There are the people that experience one losing tip and write you off as somebody that doesn’t know what they’re doing…

And then there are those that make the same mistakes over and over and over again.

Well, it’s this third group that have had me banging my head against a brick wall this morning…

Why?

Well because I’ve just seen that not one but two tipsters – people that really should know better – are backing Ronnie O’Sullivan to win the 2012 snooker World Championship.

Crash! Bang! Wallop!

And that’s after numerous tipsters (as well as goodness knows how many ordinary punters) backed O’Sullivan to win the 2011 snooker World Championship.

Biff! Pow! Thwack!

(That’s me banging my head against a brick wall by the way, not a transcript of an old Batman episode)

Now, backing O’Sullivan might have been a good idea back in the day but we are no longer ‘back in the day’ and in betting more than in any other vocation, you HAVE to move with the times.

The powers of sportsmen, women and animals all wane with age and you have to spot when the time is right to stop backing them.

Admittedly, sometimes this can be tricky – horses, for example, can summon up a great run in the middle of a bad patch of form before continuing on a downward spiral…

But sometimes, the evidence is staring you straight in the face and if you ignore it, well, I’m sorry but you deserve to lose your money.

Ronnie O’Sullivan has now failed to win a major event (that’s those televised by the BBC) since spring 2008, he’s without a ranking title since summer 2009 and he’s slipped to number 11 in the rankings…

Add to that last season’s form, which included five back to back first round exits, followed by a quarter final exit at the World Championship and you should be able to see why I’m so frustrated.

While he’s undoubtedly one of the best players to ever play the game, Ronnie’s star is on the wane…

And while he may have been able to overcome his well documented psychological issues with exceptional play in the past, his talent on the table is no longer good enough to dig himself out of those self inflicted holes.

Now don’t get me wrong, Ronnie is still capable of winning the shorter, more gimmicky events, such as the best of seven PTC tournaments that proved to be the ‘trigger’ for one tipster’s bet on the World Champs but I’ll gladly wager that he’ll never win the big one again.

In fact, that’s my tip for you today…

Regardless of who tells you otherwise, NEVER back Ronnie O’Sullivan to win the World Championship or the UK Championship (the second longest tournament)…

And if you do, well, don’t come crying to me or I’ll save myself any more pain and start banging your head against a brick wall instead!

Hi Matt….dont be so quick to write ronnie off…..did you know he is working with dr steve peters? an expert in sorting people out… eehttp://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/cycling/article5213332.ece

Thing is James, it’s not so much that side of his game that I have a problem with. It’s the fact that even when he is playing well he doesn’t seem to be good enough to win a marathon event such as the worlds. I just don’t think he has what it takes any more to play consistently throughout a tournament of that length.

As I said, I’d still back him in a shorter event (the Grand Prix perhaps) but not one which requires such a large amount of focus. He just isn’t good enough to wing it any more, especially with the depth of talent in the game currently.

Interesting article though, thanks for the link. I’ve always maintained that psychology plays a huge part in sport – England and penalty shootouts would be a good example.

Might just be a case of wait and see wouldnt be so quick to write him off just yet…..lets see if this dr peters can get him back on track….plus ronnie does need to get in the gym and do something about his fitness levels… also he needs to lose a couple of stones at least…..but your right his star has fallen….with the right folk looking after him dont be surprised if he makes a comeback

  5. Bill says:

Whoa!! Who tipped that up Matt!!!

  6. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

O’Sullivan to win the Worlds? Some pretty decent tipsters actually, which makes it all the more frustrating!

  7. Bill says:

Who is the guy you refer to at the end of the article? I want to blog this with references to your email. Tipsters like this are taking full advantage of naive punters and they obviously don’t know their sport

  8. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

To be fair to them Bill, they actully both run quite good services that make money but in this instance they appear to have fallen into the bookies’ trap.

I believe it was ‘The Insider’ that tipped Ronnie last year (among others), while Sports Profit Accelerator has tipped him this year.

  9. Bill says:

Thanks Matt, I haven’t heard of ‘The Insider’ (presume that’s a phone tipping line with a name like that!!!) but i have heard of the Sports Profit Accelerator so got a bit to work with 😉

As I said, they’re not bad services but this is not a good bet!

  11. Bill says:

Thanks for the link Matty. Never heard of that Insider service before… Mr X lol :D…

Just reading some of the other comments posted above.. > james harley… are you serious about Ronnie losing weight??? !! Surprised you know about his shrink and not the fact that he runs at least 25ks a week??

Will ask Oxfordshire Press for a record on MR X man before finishing off my post… cheers
