Review

Choice Tips is run by James Calvert on the Betfan platform and was launched in April 2019.

According to the website, James has over 45 years experience of horse racing and spends two to three hours a day researching and studying before spending a further one to two hours finalising his selections for the day. The selections are then released to members before eight o’clock each morning.

As well as through the daily email, tips can also be accessed in the members’ area of the website and via the Betfan app. The email advice is slightly enhanced from the standard Betfan format in as much as James provides a sentence or two on each of the selections. Aside from that you get the race details, selection, bet type, stake, advised odds and bookmakers offering those odds.

Although the service started off using one to five-point stakes it now appears to have gone to flat five-point stakes on all selections.

The Choice Tips marketing page on Betfan shows 177 points profit between April and August 2019, that’s an average monthly return of 35.4 points. However, 137 points of that total is attributed to the launch month of April. There is no mention of the return on investment (ROI) that has been achieved.

Results – Month 1 (1st August to 31st August 2019)

The period got off to a flying start with two winners on the first day at 5/1 and 11/4. Regular winners continued in the first half of the month and the profit reached a high of 65-points just before the mid-point. However, a run of 18 consecutive losses (by now all at five-point stakes) undid all the good work, and despite a resurgence that saw the profit back up around the 70-point mark, another losing run of 16 saw that profit wiped out as well. The month finally petered out to a loss of 13.55 points.

There were 175 selections in the month (after excluding non-runners) and these produced 29 winners, a strike rate of 16.57%. The average odds of all selections in the month was exactly 7/1 (8.0), although the winning selections averaged much lower at c.9/2 (5.59). Winning selections were advised at between 5/2 and 10/1 this month.

Summary at End of Month 1

Despite twice building the profit up close to 70-points during the month a couple of lengthy losing runs ultimately eradicated that gain. Overall, a drawdown of 5.42% of the bank is no great cause for concern in the first month.
