Another Winning Weekend

| October 12, 2010 | Reply

Our high-low bet fell agonisingly short, missing out by a solitary goal but overall it was another winning weekend thanks to Northern Ireland.

Nigel Worthington’s men battled hard to hold Italy to a 0-0 draw and could even have won the match, with David Healy coming close to ending his goal drought.

This all meant that the usual Monday morning gloom was lifted by a number of happy emails, including this one from Stuart:

“Great call (again) Matt!! I couldn’t bring myself to bet on the win, but I took the draw, which turned out very nicely.

Hot on the heels of the snooker windfall and the cricket bets, I am loving your tips and look forward eagerly to the next email.” – Stuart M.

I wanted to include this message in particular as Stuart made a very interesting point – he didn’t follow my advice to the letter.

While I will always try to give you as much detail as possible about the bet, they can still be modified to suit you.

If you are a complete betting novice, then I would advise sticking to what I say but if not, feel free to tweak my tips in any way you see fit.

In the Northern Ireland example, the draw was the more likely outcome but the good odds on the home win made for a useful ‘saver’ bet.

However, Stuart decided to take the bull by the horns and good on him!

While we had to make do with a 127% profit, he netted nearly three times his stake.

I’m no dictator, so feel free to put your own slant on things…

A Scotch Bonnet

Now, before I start, it’s nothing personal…

And in a (small) way, I hope I’m wrong…

But Scotland may just be set for a roasting this evening.

They take on World and European Champions Spain, following a less than inspiring start to their qualification campaign.

Stalemate in Lithuania was followed by near disaster against Lichtenstein and a widely condemned 1-0 reverse in the Czech Republic.

The latter was actually a respectable result…

Unfortunately, the performance was anything but.

You see, Scots manager Craig Levein was after a result and that result was the sort of 0-0 draw that makes Gary Megson look like a purveyor of ‘sexy football’…

And believe me, there is NOTHING sexy about Gary Megson.

Levein went with a stodgy 4-6-0 formation and while his team were unsurprisingly strong at the back, they were also completely toothless in attack.

Against the matadors of Spain, I can’t see too much changing on the formation front, but I can see a few more goals being shipped by the Scottish rearguard.

So, back Spain to win 2-0 at 11/2 with Blue Square…

Spain to win 3-0 at 17/2 with Unibet

And Spain to win 4-0 at 18/1 with Blue Square.

You should also ‘Dutch’ your selections so that you make the same profit regardless of which one wins…

Do this by using the ‘Dutching Calculator’ at Odds Checker.

Every cloud

Once again, this bet is all about value.

What I’ve done is taken a core idea – Spain to win to nil – and modified the bet accordingly.

You can actually back Spain to win to nil but at a best priced 5/6, the odds are decidedly skinny.

But, get this…

By ‘Dutching’ our three selections, we are left with a price of 3.2, which, for fraction lovers, is better than 2/1!

Sure, the bet will be a loser if Spain only win 1-0 but can you really envisage Alonso, Villa and co being held to a solitary strike?

And it’s also true that if Spain win 5, 6 or 7-0 we will lose our bet but with the Scots possessing home advantage and a defensive mindset, is that really likely?

No, I thought not.

So, choose your stake…

Dutch it…

And back Spain to win 2-0 (Blue Square), 3-0 (Unibet) and 4-0 (Blue Square).

If you are Scottish, it might be a little painful but if your team loses and the bet wins at least you’ll have the funds to drown your sorrows.

And let’s face it, it could be worse…

The Faroe Islands haven’t picked up so much as a point in European qualifying since 2002.

I wonder who that was against…
