Value for Money?

As always, I’m going to defer this comment until the end of the review, but the pricing is competitive in today’s market. Despite the competitive pricing, the results for the three-month review make it impossible for us to give this service a value for money pass.

Quality of Customer Service?

Part of the Tipster Street stable of tipsters and benefits from the infrastructure that comes from that. My communication with the owner Neil has always been very professional and timely. When I have used the support link through the web site I have always received a prompt and helpful response.

Alan Wood Racing is the newest addition to the Tipster Street portfolio of sports tipsters having joined them in December 2017 after impressing in his initial trial period. The service is as simple and straightforward as they come. Two selections daily on UK and Irish racing, one selection to win and the other each way. Staking is consistent at four points on one selection and two points on the other to give a total daily outlay of six points. This could be four points to win and one point each way, or two points to win and two points each way.

This approach means there will generally be around 60 tips per month in total. Placing the selections is a simple and quick process each day and the quoted prices are generally available with more than one bookmaker.

There is a full breakdown of Alan’s results since he started in December 2017 on the website, and this is updated daily with the latest results.

The headline for this service is “Value, Value, Value” and with average odds of 15/2 across all selections in the first month this is clearly the focus.

Results – Month 1 (21st May to 20th June 2018)

Unfortunately, Alan hasn’t made the most auspicious of starts to the trial, with a loss of 17.43 points the result for the first month. However, that is why we use a three-month review period, as a single month’s performance neither makes nor breaks a tipster. We hope for an improved performance in Month 2.

Of the 58 selections in the month, only nine were winners, although there were a further seven placed each way runners. The win strike rate was therefore down at 15.52%.

The longest losing run was eight selections which came right at the start of the month and left Alan playing catch up for the rest of the period. In fairness, after that run the rest of the month actually delivered a profit of 4.38 points, but the damage had already been done.

The highlight of the month was undoubtedly June 3rd, when 11/1 (each way) and 9/2 winners delivered a single day profit of 36.5 points.

Results – Month 2 (21st June to 20th July 2018)

The second month started with 19 consecutive losing tips, which when added to the two losers to close out the previous month means a losing streak of 21. Although the rest of the month fared better with a profit of 4.6 points, the damage had already been done and we ended the second month with a loss of 55.4 points. Added to the loss brought forward from Month 1, the cumulative deficit now stands at 72.83 points.

With just five winners (there were three placed each way selections) from 56 tips in the month, the win strike rate was a hugely disappointing 8.98%. Over the two months we have now seen just 14 winners from 114 selections, at an overall strike rate of 12.28%.

There is little else to say about what can only be described as a poor month for Alan Wood Racing.

Results – Month 3 (21st July to 20th August 2018)

After a torrid first two months of the review, there was some respite in the final month as 28.3 points of profit were secured. However, this failed to eradicate the losses brought forward and we ended the review period in a deficit of 44.53 points.

The number of selections this month remained constant with the previous months, totalling 60 this time and an average of 58 per month across the trial. The strike rate was the best we have seen at 16.67% (10 winners) and, combined with the average odds of the winning selections being 5.93 (just under 5/1) and a greater ratio of winners being four-point selections as opposed to two, this produced the first monthly profit of the review.

In fact the average winning odds was the lowest we had seen in the three months (11/2 and 9/1 previously), but the combination with the improved strike rate and higher staked winners was key. Month 3 saw 60% (6/10) of the winning selections being four-point bets compared to 33.3% (3/9) in Month 1 and 40% (2/5) in Month 2.

The return on investment (ROI) in Month 3 was a very acceptable 15.72% when taken in isolation, but overall we saw our bank diminish by almost a half in three months.

Summary at End of Month 1

Obviously, the poor start to the month made it difficult, but the fact that a small profit ensued after that, and there was a single day profit of 36.5 points, shows that the service has potential to turn it around in the next two months.

Summary at End of Month 2

The seeds of encouragement from the second half of Month 1 were well and truly wiped out by the start to Month 2. Although the second half of the month again proved  profitable, the overall picture looks bleak from the trial to date.

Summary at End of Month 3

The final month gave us a glimpse of what this service is capable of producing. However, taking the review overall I am awarding Alan Wood Racing a two-star rating. As with all of our other reviewees, you can follow the progress of the service and see if the recovery continues via The Tipster League pages.
