Advent Tips – December 19th

| December 19, 2010 | Reply

With the snow causing havoc I’ve decided to pick an event which will go ahead tonight regardless of the weather conditions.

It’s an event that has a history of throwing up dubious winners but is nevertheless one of the more enjoyable festive fixtures. And what’s more, I’ve come up with a bet that seems to tick all the right boxes.

So, stick and kettle on and hide the remote. Its that time of year again…

December 19th

Back Graeme McDowell to win Sports Personality of the Year WITHOUT Tony McCoy. This bet is currently a best priced 6/4 with Sky Bet and William HillWilliam Hill Sports.

Forget X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, the only piece of TV worth watching this December is Sports Personality of the Year. Ok, so the best candidate doesn’t always win (far from it in fact) but it’s an entertaining way to wrap up a year of sport nonetheless.

Tonight it should be all about the brilliant Tony McCoy. The 15 time Champion Jockey is as short as 8/15 in places to win the main prize and while I don’t really want to oppose him, history is very much against McCoy.

That’s because nobody from the world of horseracing has ever won Sports Personality. No one. Not. A. Soul.

That, despite the fact that British sporting heavyweights such as Zara Phillips and the Canadian Greg Rusedski have somehow managed to emerge victorious!

While horseracing has provided just two third place finishers, golf has a significantly better record with two winners, three runners up and two third places. This year that tally should be boosted by one Graeme McDowell.

McDowell has had a fantastic year, becoming Europe’s first US Open champion for 40 years and then winning the decisive singles match in the Ryder Cup. The very least he should be expecting is a second place finish but I believe that there is every chance that he will pip McCoy to top spot.

However, having said that, I will be supporting McCoy and you do just get the feeling that this is finally going to be his year. Therefore I will be backing McDowell to win without McCoy.

Should he take the trophy we get paid and should he finish second to Tony, we also get paid.

Right, I’m off to brave the snow and do some Christmas shopping. If I’m not back tomorrow, send a search party.
