Advent Tips – December 12th

| December 12, 2010 | 3 Replies

Unfortunately our saver bet went down the pan last night as Shaun Murphy threw away an 8-6 lead to lose 9-8 to Mark Williams. However, on the plus side Higgins is as short as 1.37 with Betfair to win the final. Therefore, we can still lay Higgins and guarantee a profit whoever wins.

December 12th

Lay John Higgins to beat Mark Williams at 1.38 with Betfair. This bet is ONLY for people that took the initial bet on Higgins to win the UK Championship. Assuming you backed Higgins with 1 point, you should risk a liability of 2.5 points – this equates to a stake of 6.5 points.

This bet will ensure that if Higgins wins today’s final, we make an overall profit of 5.5 points from our ante-post snooker bet. That is the original 10 (Higgins was 10/1), minus the 2 spent on Murphy, minus the 2.5 spent on today’s bet.

If Higgins loses today we will still make a 3.5 point profit. That is 6.5 points from today’s lay bet (you win the same amount as your stake), minus the 1 point spent on Higgins, minus  the 2 points spent on Murphy.

I realise this may sound a little complicated but it is well worth doing. If you originally backed Higgins with £10 at 10/1 all you have to do now is lay him on Betfair with a stake of £65. This equates to a liability (the amount you would lose) of £25.

    Matt,
Please excuse the greenhorn question, but I’ve only just started looking into this betting lark. Why do we lay Higgins rather than backing Williams?
    Ta,

    Hi Pete,

Sorry for the late reply. I’ve been staying at a friend’s this weekend and have had minimal access to the internet.

You could have backed Williams and guaranteed a profit but it’s generally slightly more profitable to lay in this type of situation rather than to back.

Well I don’t know about anyone else but I’m almost not bothered about the win right now. That was one of the best games of snooker I’ve ever seen.

Whether you like the game or not any sports fan will have appreciated that. Just fantastic.
