A Craic-A-Jack Betting Opportunity

Anyone know which British side has been the most impressive in international qualifiers recently?

It’s not Scotland, despite their glorious 97th minute winner against the mighty Liechtenstein…

It’s not England – their recent groups have been pretty straightforward and yet they still failed to qualify in 2008…

And obviously it’s not Wales…

So step forward Northern Ireland.

They may be the smallest country of the lot but that hasn’t stopped them from excelling in recent years and they very nearly made the play-offs in each of the last two campaigns.

In fact, during qualifying for Euro 2008, they took a hugely impressive 20 points from a group containing, amongst others, Spain, Sweden and Denmark.

Picking up where they left off, qualifying for 2012 has also started strongly, with an away victory in Slovenia against a team that impressed at the World Cup.

Next up they take on an Italian side that did anything but impress in South Africa, in a game that looks ripe for a shock.

Northern Ireland at home are a formidable obstacle as England, Spain and various other nations know all too well and another famous win on Friday is not beyond them.

Neither is the draw and with both selections looking overpriced, we could be onto a winner by backing Nigel Worthington’s men.

Pimp my bet

This bet is similar to the ‘double chance’ market but better.

It’s been modified you see, kinda like what Westwood does in ‘Pimp My Ride’…

Only we’re not going to be building a ‘Fonzi’ Ford or transforming a ‘Bugly’ Beetle…

Oh no.

We’re going to be doing something far more exciting – or at least a little less headache inducing – by squeezing every last bit of value out of our Northern Ireland bet.

The ‘double chance’ market allows you to back two outcomes in a match.

For Northern Ireland and the draw, this bet is currently a best priced 6/5.

Instead of taking this, what we’re going to do is ‘Dutch’ the home win and the draw…

You can head over to the ‘Dutching Calculator’ at Odds Checker to work out how to split your stake but for a stake of £10, you would place £6.05 on the draw and £3.95 on the home win.

If the bet wins, you make a profit of £12.70…

If your £10 ‘double chance’ bet had won, you’d have only made £12.

Clever innit?!

Home comforts

I’m a big fan of the smaller, more intimidating stadia.

They may not be as glamorous as the Emirates or the new Wembley but venues like Southampton’s old ground, The Dell, can be worth their weight in gold.

Big, flashy teams generally hate travelling to the more ‘old school’ venues in world football and teams with such a stadium often have very strong home records…

I mean, just look at how Southampton’s fortunes have slumped since they moved to St. Marys.

Now, you don’t get much bigger or flashier than the Italian national side and at a capacity of just over 20,000 and with a great home support, Windsor Park certainly falls into the intimidating stadia bracket.

Northern Ireland’s competitive home record over the last four years reads eight wins, one loss and one draw.

That’s a superb record for any nation, let alone one that regularly gets handed tough groups due to its low seeding.

Make no mistake; Northern Ireland will fancy their chances on Friday night and quotes of 4/7 for an Italian victory appear to have seriously underestimated the home side.

Today’s Trivia

Q. David Healy is Northern Ireland’s all time record goal scorer but when did he last find the back of the net for his country?

A. Healy last scored for Northern Ireland on 15th October 2008 during a 4-0 home win over San Marino.

Healy has 35 goals for Northern Ireland and was the top scorer of any player in Europe during Euro 2008 qualification. However, he is currently experiencing a drought that stretches back to a World Cup qualifier against lowly San Marino in 2008.

Healy is in the squad for Northern Ireland’s match with Italy and will be hoping to find his form on Friday night.
