The Best Ante-post Action In This Season’s Championship

| August 6, 2010 | Reply

It’s so close you can almost touch it.

The Football League season kicks off this evening as newly promoted Norwich, take on Watford in the Championship.

For football fans, it’s the most exciting time of year…

So much so, that it seemed only right to bring The Betting Rant forward this week to get our last minute bets in ahead of the action.

One of the great summer traditions for many fans is the placing of their ante-post bets…

And for good reason – there’s some great value to be had.

Unfortunately for the majority of us, we don’t spot that value, because we are concentrating on the odds related to our own team…

Which, inevitably, leads to some bets that have about as much chance of winning as the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest.

This is where I come in, because over the next few hundred words, I’m going to guide you towards some of the best ante- post bets available…

Bets grounded in cold, hard reason…

And not an impressive pre-season victory over Carlisle reserves.

A Championship dark horse

We kick off with the Championship and a great outside bet for the play-offs – Barnsley.

Every year there is at least one surprise package in the Championship…

The last two years, those teams (Blackpool and Burnley) have gone all the way and won promotion.

This time, it’s the Tykes that can make a splash, but with the odds on offer, you won’t even need them to finish in the top six to make some money…

Simply take the 12/1 on offer and should they be there or thereabouts come Easter, lay off the bet at a much shorter price.

Barnsley can currently be backed at 12’s with both Stan James and Coral, which is great value considering they have looked like a team transformed, following the appointment of Mark Robins.

The former Manchester United player got the job off the back of an impressive spell with Rotherham…

He didn’t disappoint.

Barnsley looked destined for the drop, after an awful start to the season saw them propping up the rest of the league come September…

Then manager Simon Davey was sacked and the team that had only survived relegation the previous season by the skin of their teeth, was in turmoil…

And yet just a few short weeks later, the Yorkshire club had climbed clear of the bottom three and settled in mid-table, where they stayed for the rest of the campaign.

Once Robins had stamped his mark on the team, they rarely looked in even a small degree of danger and finished up a respectable 16 points off the play-offs.

This time, with a stronger start and some exciting new signings…

Uruguay international Diego Arismendi has joined on loan from Stoke…

I see no reason why they can’t make up that gap and challenge for a spot in the top six.

The lesser spotted scoring Scotsman

There was one piece of transfer news that really surprised me this summer.

It wasn’t Joe Cole to Liverpool…

Or Thierry Henry to New York Cosmos…

It was Kris Boyd to Middlesbrough.

Now this isn’t because I support Boro…

I don’t.

It’s because the striker can do so much better.

After all, this is the man that scored 192 goals in 341 games in Scottish football…

And 7 in 15 in international football.

Now, even if Scottish football is a little below par at the moment…

Which it is.

Those are some seriously impressive stats and more than enough to make him a good acquisition for a team playing in Europe this season.

It stands to reason then, that he should be more than capable of maintaining such an impressive strike rate in the Championship…

Which would make him a shoo-in for the Golden Boot.

Unsurprisingly, he currently heads this particular betting market…

But you’ll be very pleased to know the bookies have got their prices very very wrong.

Even in a market with so many candidates, 11/2 would be a fair price for Boyd…

And yet are currently offering a best priced 8/1…

That’s eight English pounds for every one pound staked!

Seriously, you need to bite their hands off NOW because this price won’t last.

But don’t worry too much if it does disappear, because you can also head over to Paddy Power who are currently offering 15/2.

So that’s Barnsley to finish in the top six at 12/1 with Stan James or Coral

And Kris Boyd to finish as top goal-scorer at 8/1 with .
