Nigel’s Nags

| June 9, 2011 | 74 Replies

Nigel has been profiting from the horses using his own selection method since 1988. Now, he’s almost ready to share it with the world.

Here’s Nigel’s story…

“Just browsing your website Betting Rant and found a section on Proofing. It is such a relief to find that I am not the only person on this planet to realise that just because the “bookies
always win” (how many times have you heard that?), nobody else can! However, you have also thrown down the gauntlet to me!

“I devised a selection method (system…whatever) for horses in 1988, when a computer was so big it filled a room, had spools of tape spinning round and men in white coats wearing glasses waiting for a piece of paper to pop out of it! So I would spend all day and night too sometimes trying to perfect this method. On big days of racing I would be at the newspaper shop at 04.00 to buy the papers I wanted. I made a few quid for a while, but then the bookies started to limit my bets. I moved house.

“After a few months I started dating a girl from the new bookies I was now using. She told me that my description was in the “Big Bets File” and if I didn’t tone down my betting I would be shut down.

“I moved house …………”

We’ll test this using a 1000 point start bank.

Hexham 14.30

1 ELY BROWN 55
2 BE MY DEPUTY 40
3 CROP WALKER 65
4 SOLEIL MALTA 10
5 KAYAKA 20

ELY BROWN is likely to be very short odds here,
(prohibitive sods), I mean odds, so the value is going
to be in second place.

CROP WALKER is most likely and at 1/4 odds.
If you can get 20/1 or more take 2 points e/w. – 1st at 5/1

BE MY DEPUTY will be on the scene if there is
any bother with Ely Brown. So if you can get 25/1
or more take 1/2 point e/w. – 3rd at 14/1

SOLEIL MALTA looks the donkey to lay-off but I
don’t think there will be any odds for it. Lay 2points
if it is worth it. – 5th at 40/1

seems fair, but how do you get these points that you gauge your winners on.

    Stu.

  2. Nigel says:

    Hi Stu,
When you look through a horses’ form you can get as much information as you like to read, ranging from it’s sire to the odds on it in it’s first race. Some of this info is more useful than others. I allocate points to the useful and you see the tolal of those points for each horse.
    Regards.

    Hi Matt/Nigel

I would like to trial this for you. Also it seems a bit more advanced than what im used to so I think ill be a good marker for potential others and if I can do it then you know everyone else would be able to too

    Hi Ian/Razor/Wayne,

Thanks for your interest. I’m hoping to kick this off on Friday so I’ll get back to you all before then.

I think chances are we’ll send the tips out via email and draw a line under this page as it’s getting a wee bit crowded.

    Thanks,
    Matt

looks interesting, would be happy to trial it between now and 25th august if allowed.been through lots of dodgy betting systems-anything that clearly profits over a month without much in the way of losing runs would be welcome as trying to earn a supplement to my crummy pension seems to the only important item on my agenda this year

    Hi Laurie,

Yeah, I think consistency is key. You’re always going to get losing runs of course but the profits from these selections have built up nicely over the proofing period to date.

I’ll add you to the list of triallists and will be in touch via email by the end of this week.

    Matt

  9. RM says:

I would be interested in giving this a trial – looks interesting.

  10. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

Righto RM, that’s eight now (including some requests by email).

I’ll set a limit on this of 21 I think. As I said in today’s Betting Rant, it won’t cost you a penny but I am asking for some feedback at the end of the trial and some testimonials if you like the service.

There’s no requirement to bet a set amount of money on the selections but it will give you a better feel for the service if you do place the bets (rather than just paper trade) even if you’re only using 50p stakes.

  11. James Green says:

    Hi Matt,
As per other comments, it looks interesting and anything that makes a profit in the long term is worth a look.
Happy to be considered as a trialist.
    Cheers,
    James.

  12. Peter Colledge says:

    Hi Matt,
I’m prepared to give it a go. I do like a number with analysis…makes it easier to see and harder to hide behind.

  13. john quirk says:

yes matt very interested the only problem l may have is being around when you send the info in order to put the bet on. cheers john

  14. Keith bate says:

willing to put money down initially small amounts but will increase if it does well !

  15. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Good stuff.

    12 places filled, 9 left.

  16. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi John,

The bets will be sent out each day around lunchtime so if you can’t check your email at that time of day it probably won’t be suited to you.

If you only miss out on the odd day then it won’t matter too much so it’s just a case of how often you’ll be able to place them.

Let me know if you’d like to go ahead or not.

    Matt

  17. I would like to be considered in trial if possible, I’m a bit of a novice but this seems interesting, thanks

  18. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Danny,

That’s great thanks. The plan is to make this a slightly more advanced and detailed horseracing service but it’ll be great to get a beginner’s perspective so that it can be made to be as accessible as possible.

    Matt

  19. Brian Mottram says:

What was the overall profit on the above results?

  20. bob gibbs says:

i will try your 7 10 bet at southwell lets see what happens.

  21. Gordon Suckley says:

Hi Matt,I’m interested in the trial,so keep my name in reserve should you have a vacancy-or someone drops out,Thanks,Gordon. No response neccessary.

  22. Clyde says:

Very interested to see this point system for each horse is worked out please count me in cheers

  23. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

Brian – the updated bank is at the bottom of each day, so after a month of live proofing (selections have gone up BEFORE the races have taken place) a profit of 227.96 points has been made. What this equates to in terms of cash depends on how much you are assigning per point but even at £1 a point, that’s an very impressive £227 profit.

Clyde/Gordon – I have room for both of you so you’re in.

That leaves us with around five available places with John, Bob and Brian yet to be confirmed.

  24. Ian Fraser says:

Would be more than happy to trial this service and provide feedback as required, anything thats returning over 20% ROI in a month is worth a look 🙂

  25. Brian L says:

I would be happy to trial the service if you still have any places. The email address I have given is not my usual address but the one I would need the daily tips sent to.

  26. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Brian/Ian,

Yep still room for you. Couple of places left.

  27. nigel forsyth says:

Looks interesting – I don’t normally have much time for horses or dogs but would be interested in trying this service out.

  28. clive says:

    Hi Matt

If there are any places left I would like to be considered.e.mail address my normal one. Cheers Clive

  29. chris says:

would be happy to trial the service allowing for places

  30. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Thanks everyone.

No doubt there will be a few requests by email too (I’ve not got access to the inbox at the moment) so I’ll draw a line under it here.

Everyone that’s expressed an interest up to now should be good to go but I’ll send round a group email confirming at some stage tomorrow or Thursday.

  31. Andrew says:

    Hi Matt,
Just got in and would be happy to trial if there are any places left.

    Cheers,
    Andy.

  32. john quirk says:

yes matt that should be ok

  33. kevin says:

    hi matt,
just looked at my emails, and i would love to be involved in trialing this with you. hope there is room for me. look forward to hearing from you.
    regards
    kev

  34. John McCann says:

Just back from holiday, will give it a go if there is any room left,John

  35. John Levick says:

    Hi Matt

Wouldnt mind giving this a trial after all the systems failed to produce the goods.
As my weekly shortfall 1s in the region of 250 – 300 do you think the system would raise this for me?
    With regards
    John

  36. barry says:

    Hi Matt,

I would be interested in trialling this service

    Regards

    Barry

  37. Ian says:

Hi Matt, I have been following the selections to date and the service seems very promising. I have only noticed this thread today so if there are any place left I would like to be included.

    Thanks
    Ian

  38. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi John,

I’m afraid you can’t really budget around any system or service. When betting you should only do so with money that you can afford to lose, so that if you do hit a bad run it doesn’t leave you in financial difficulty.

Nigel’s selections have been very good to date and betting at £1 a point would have made you over £200 since we started proofing a month ago but, as I said, nothing is immune from a bad run.

    Matt

  39. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

As for everybody else, I will collate all the names and email addresses that have expressed an interest this morning and send round a group email this afternoon.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to fit everybody in but I’ll do my best. If I can’t fit everybody in it will be a case of first come, first served.

    Thanks,
    Matt

  40. John says:

    Hi, Matt!

I am a total novice in this business but I believe you should start somewhere. I think this is the best place to start. Therefore, I would like to be considered if there are still places left. Thanks.

    John

  41. Geoff says:

    Hi Matt,
This sounds really interesting and if you have room for another reviewer I would like to be considered.I have done reviews before for Matt Bisogno on Gee-Geez.com so I do have an idea of what you require.
    All the best.

    Geoff.

  42. Matt C says:

Hi Matt, def looks interesting and i would love to try it. I have tried a few systems and am trialling one now. Hope you can fit me in !!

  43. Len Gore says:

Looks interesting, is there a slot left?

  44. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Len,

I can just about squeeze you in but that’s now twice as many as I had in mind so I’ll have to draw the line after you.

No more room at the inn I’m afraid!

    Matt

  45. Ali says:

I would love to join in for trial unfortunately i could not join before today as i just came from sunny spain an hour ago.If there was any more space left or cancellation please count me in
    Regards
    Ali Selcuk

  46. Andrew Adamson says:

    Hi Matt

This was a great service to trial, top notch reasoning and logic behind the selections. Very few bad runs from the selections. Great potential. Extremely impressed.

  47. Andrew Adamson says:

In answer to the points that you made Matt:

    1) Thought it was a great trial, not many bad runs from the selections and the recommendations were inciteful and first class.

    2) Beagan by paper trading then moved on to small stakes betting, very impressed and made a small but impressive profit.

3)Everything is about cost and value, I would definately be interested in adding Nigel’s Nags to my portfolio.

4)Good reasoning behind the selections, with a large majority of them running well.

5)No real negatives from my side.

6)It would be better if the selections were sent at an earlier time, eg no later than 11am?

7)The figures helped to understand why certain selections were recommended, very useful.

    8) Selections by e-mail but maybe a little earlier.

Thanks once more for giving me the opportunity to participate inthis trial, I would highly recommend the service if it went live.

    Best Regards
    Andrew Adamson

  48. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll let you know via the Betting Rant when we’re ready to go ‘live’ with it.

    Matt

  49. Steven says:

I would be interested to trial

  50. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Steven,

I’m afraid the trial period has been and gone but the service will be launching on Friday, so you’ll have an opportunity to get involved then.

    Matt

  51. leslie says:

Interesting- but were you “proofing” to http://www.racing-index.com, or will you be doing this in the future ?

with no disrespect, anyone can produce a list of bets after the event.

I would love to be involved if it is properly “proofed”.

  52. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

Please don’t make me tear my hair out Leslie!

These bets were proofed live – that is the whole reason I have a proofing section on my website.

I wouldn’t have wasted the web space just to copy and paste a bunch of past results. This page has been up here since the start of June, with all selections posted some time before the races took place.

Over the last couple of months I’ve also been running a live trial, with somewhere in the region of 50 ‘proofers’ as you’ll gather from the comments above.

    Matt

  53. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

By the way Leslie, if that sounded slightly short I apologise.

I seem to spend half my life trying to prove the validity of claims when really I’d like to be spending it improving the results so that they’re even better. That can grate at times!

These particular bets weren’t proofed to Racing Index but I can assure you that a) they are all genuine and b) I can back that up with evidence if neccessary.

    Matt

  54. Brian Mottram says:

Could you keep me informed when the system goes live please.Looks good

    Brian M

  55. David says:

    Hi Matt
Having read the above i sounds good. I presume that as you sent the email to me, I can still join in.
Please add my email to this list.
    Thanks

  56. Oliver says:

Great service. Have followed this one and can’t wait till it goes live.

    Keep up the great work.

  57. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi,

It will be opening to everyone tomorrow but as a fully fledged service, not just a trial.

Full details to follow in the Betting Rant.

    Matt

  58. John Chapman says:

System looks good to me. Please add my email to the list Matt.

  59. willie baird says:

hi matt tryn 2 get on board wi this nigels system but havn difficulty wi the site wont accept mi surname u got any idea wots goin on then eh regards willie

  60. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    No sorry, that’s very odd.

I can’t do anything about it over the weekend I’m afraid but give me an email if it still hasn’t worked by Monday and I’ll get someone to sort it out for you.

    Matt

  61. Chris O'Shea says:

After much hype leading up to the public release of this system I signed up to it. Money was taken straight away from my account (£400)and Ive heard nothing in the past 2 weeks – not even a thank you email for signing up !! The bets / tips were supposed to follow within ‘2-3 days but still nothing. I appreciate theres not going to be something every day but after 2 weeks. Any one else had this problem ??

    Chris

  62. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Chris,

I would email customer services if I was you.

Emails have gone out every day since last Monday and so something has clearly gone wrong in the sign up process.

    Regards,
    Matt

  63. Gerry says:

signed up no tips no word

  64. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Gerry,

Contact the support email address and they should be able to sort it out for you.

It’s up and running fine and has been for the last two weeks so I guess there must have been some sort of problem with your sign up.

    Regards,
    Matt

  65. Chris O'Shea says:

    Hi Matt

I have sent an email to customer services but the reply I got back was that they were forwarding my query onto yourself. This is now another week gone of the 4 week trial and still no bets /tips received.
Please can you sort this out and also forward a report of the 3 weeks I have missed.

    Many thanks

    Chris

  66. Chris O'Shea says:

    Hi Matt

After another week of no correspondance from anyone, no tips received, confirmation nothing – I wish to cancel this trial and my money refunded.

    Many Thanks

    Chris

  67. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Chris,

This really does have nothing to do with me or the Betting Rant – it’s not my service.

I don’t know what Agora customer services are playing at but you need to speak to them.

I’m guessing if you’ve had no confirmation they won’t have taken a payment so there will be no money to be refunded anyway?

    Matt

  68. Chris O'Shea says:

    Matt

Im on to Agora CS now, but the credit card payment was taken straight away so theres £450 to be refunded !!

    Regards

  69. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Ok, fair enough.

I don’t know why they directed you back to me but they shouldn’t have done.

  70. Keith bate says:

    Hi matt,
I was one of the people who trialed NN earlier in the year. And I tried to sighn up for the full service using the 50 per cent discount offer. The link would not let me do this and I have now signed up via the Direct Debit service for the full price. As you can imagine I am not particularly happy about this. My quotes have been used during the promotion which it is fine but frankly I feel a bit let down by the betting rant not delivering what was promised. Can anything be done about this ?
    cheers, keith

  71. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Keith,

Yes of course and to be honest you really should have contacted me sooner rather than paying in full (unless you have and I’ve missed the email).

If you ring Agora customer services on this number 020 7633 3630 they should be able to refund the difference. Tell them to speak to me if they’re not sure.

    Regards,
    Matt

  72. Keith bate says:

    Hi matt,
I did send you an email weeks ago. But I went away on hols to Australia and new Zealand just after for 4 weeks and have only just returned (this trip was financed by the 6 thousand I have made from my betting this year !). I have now spoken to customer services at Agora and they are sorting out the discount for me. But thanks for that anyway.
I have been a “little out of the loop” over the last 4 weeks (deliberately Isimply wanted to enjoy the holiday without bothering about betting). So I wondered how NN has done since it went “live”. I have seen no reports for this period and I know that the service did go through a bit of a “sticky patch” in its final proofing period. TO be fair even in this period it made a small profit in the end. but did not do anywhere nearas well as it had done in the earlier proofing periods. Any way I am on board now !!
    cheers,
    keith

  73. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Keith,

That’s good to hear. Sorry about missing the initial email – I’ve also been away a fair bit recently.

It’s currently in profit since the launch but only by a little bit. I think the main reason for this slow spell is the transition from flat to jump racing and I fully expect it to pick up shortly.

    Regards,
    Matt

  74. Keith bate says:

    Hi Matt,
A profit is a profit. Well I seem to have got on board at the right time !
my first bet was the five points on the winner at Folkstone but I also had a few pounds on the reverse forecast and Reggy Perrin duly came in second at a really good price ! thanks nigil
    cheers,
    keith
