The four teams remaining in the Championship hunt are Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers.

Miami Heat continue to be the overwhelming favourites and they are currently priced at around 1.40 to win the whole thing. That is a very low price which I will continue to shy away from – if the Spurs’ were to make it through to the final I fully expect them to give the Heat a very tough run for their money.

I will personally be taking some the 4/1 (Betfair) that says the Spurs’ end the 2013 season as Champions.

Anyway never mind that – let’s crack on with this week’s games. They are:

• Memphis Grizzlies @ San Antonio Spurs
• Indian Pacers @ Miami Heat

Looking at those fixtures from a distance, it’s pretty hard to see anything other than two home wins.

This is Conference Finals time, which means winning home games is key and big teams like the Spurs and Heat are more than competent at dominating others on their home court.

What final would be the better game to watch, I hear you say. Well the Heat vs. Pacers contest wins that argument by a country mile. LeBron and Co like to score heavy points while keeping things tight at the back and the Pacers simply go out trying to outscore their opponents. This leads to very entertaining basketball.

Spurs vs. Grizzlies on the other hand will be a full out war. The Grizzlies is built up of five Mark van Bommel like players who love nothing more than fouling their opponents left, right and centre. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve got this far doing it but the Spurs should be more than streetwise enough to knock them out with a couple games to spare.

The people at Inside Rail run 4 services and we will be looking at all four of them over the next couple of months.

The Form Guru
This is a form based service from the best form reader in the country and they claim to have had 10 winning years in a row with very few losing months.
These selections come with what you should stake on each of them and analysis of why its a bet.

The Gold Service
This is completely the opposite to the Form Guru as this service is 100% information based, and only the most confident pieces of information are given out as bets.
With these again you will be given the number of points you should stake on the selections.
The service which was set up in 2011 is said to have made over 400pts profit in the first year from just 4-6 selections per week.
A very big statement to make indeed.

The Pro Punt Service
This is aimed at the punter who wants fewer bets and you can expect around 8-10 bets per month.
It claims a profit every year since its launch in 2000 with a 90% strike rate on its maximum bets.

The Lay Service
This was only launched in Oct 2011 and is 100% information based and has a very high strike rate.

A couple of problems with the quoted prices today and although it didnt make a difference today it does need to be pointed out.
The 7/1 for Crannaghmore Boy had long gone by the time the email arrived and the 14/1 quoted for Tristram Shandy was for first 5 places with Paddy Power that price with Paddy was cut at 10.40 to 11/1, the email was sent at 12.05, so was never available with them,
14/1 was there with other bookies but 1st 4 places.
As far as I am concerned these quoted prices should be there when the email arrives and there is no excuse for quoting a price that had gone over an hour before the email was sent.

Initial Thoughts.

Each day they will generally provide anything from 1 to 3 tennis tips for that particular day’s play via email. Tips are also placed on the members section of the website. The tips will be issued between 10am and 12pm GMT. They will also provide a suggested stake of your bank. You should place the bets they have picked at the suggested bookmaker in order to gain the best odds. They generally recommend a £500 bank to test drive the system, and ideally a £1,000+ bank to make profitable gains each month. They estimate that there tips on average make 20% per month.

The latest product that my team will be taking a look at in the coming weeks is Summer Soccer Predictor. No names are mentioned on the promotion page for this product whilst is is signed off as ‘summer soccer predictor’.

So, what is Summer Soccer Predictor? Well, it’s a football tips service which is run by a guy who has worked within the betting industry for over a decade having also worked as an odds compiler. The provider claims to have made 169 points profit in the summer of 2012 and appears highly confident in improving upon that this summer.

Initial thoughts

As mentioned above, home page of this product contains some general information about the system, as well as claim of 169 points profit made last season. However, records of bets made during that season is nowhere to be found. I am used to find a link somewhere on the page to “Past records”, to have the overview of the bets and get the feeling what can one expect – type of bets, number of bets per day, stakes, etc.

The introducing mail thoroughly explained bank and staking system, and ways of picks delivery – those who don’t want to rely on mails can check their members area, where picks are regularly posted.

Mails are very well structured – they contain match, selection and kick-off time presented in a tidy way, along with best available odds and next best odds from another several bookmakers. Those who are used to decimal odds will face a tiny obstacle – odds quoted within the mail are in fractional format, but we’ll have to live with it.

Overall, introducing mails give the impression of well organized and maintained service. But will it deliver us some cash, too, as promised? Stay with us in following two months to check it!

Kick-off of this review was not successfull – first pick lost. They advised to bet 10 units on BTTS in Norwegian match Haugesund v Sogndal, but these two teams combined managed to score only one goal, so we lost our 10 units.

It looks like I have joined the party at the wrong time, since they say beginning of the season was successfull, with 4 won, 1 lost and 1 void pick, but it’s still long journey ahead.

Initial Thoughts
This is a software package that will help us with risk management of bets.
The software package is easy to install and the code to unlock the software was received within 24 hours so that was good.
Please be aware the system does not give any tips. The purpose is for us to use the software to manage our risk and extract money as we go rather than build up and go bust. Or never be confident enough to increase our stake.
I plan to run the software using two of my own betting systems. I will record the results separately for each system. The two systems – one has on average 3-4 bets per week. The other runs weekdays only.

How does it work?
It is an accumulator bet system, where you increase your stake with every winner. The difference is that you are in control of how much gets re-staked as you go through, hopefully generating winners.
You take some money off the table as you go – firstly you are recouping your stake, then you are guaranteeing profits.

I will use a flat £10 bet for each opening bet on both my systems. So 1 point equates to £10, obviously you can set your stake at whatever level you are comfortable with and have different initial stakes for different systems.

If anybody has experience of this software I would be interested in your comments.

Bad day at the office! 4 bets all lost. Still leaves me with a selection win rate of 60%. But on the compound it relies on wins in a row. So latest update 24 points bet, result = -5.1.

2 weekly bets yesterday, first one lost and second is still in play after 2 wins on it. Should be more today, so latest position 20 points bet, -2.3 on the cumulative with 1 in play

Weekly bets – rocking on and in one at the moment, This is already taking profit off the table. In the meanwhile we have had another 3 that have bombed out. Struggling to get beyond three wins on the trot. Latest position cumulative 18 points return -0.9

Initial Thoughts

This is a straightforward tips system, requiring you to log on to a website to access the qualifiers. They are presented with an odds range, so if you can’t manage to get them in the range specified, you need to keep checking back on the odds to see if it qualifies at a later stage. If not, treat it as a no bet situation.

Results have been excellent over the past year or so, & I have certainly seen PIP riding high in the tables of at least one proofing website. However, the inevitable bad run has reared its ugly head over the last few weeks, so it will be interesting to see how the change over to the new flat season affects results. That recent bad run has featured many frustrating near misses, but at least that indicates the selections are in the right ball park. On his blog, Phil discusses how the very bad weather we’ve had this winter may have affected training regimes, which is a reasonable theory.

Phil advises that he likes to keep his flat & jumps results separate. This sounds sensible as it allows results to be analysed in isolation & any particular problems with one or the other form of racing to be addressed. However, he is happy for the 2 codes to be combined for this review, with a combined bank of 100 points to start. All bets are 1 point win bets unless stated otherwise. As usual, I will be using Betfair SP for results (as does Phil himself – he looks to be a big fan of Betfair).

We also came a nose away from another winner with Ian’s Dream late on, so a very encouraging day.

The annoying bit? 2 of those non Qs were winners: Iffraaj Pink at 2.88 & Sea Meets Sky at … wait for it … 28.76! So, amid much gnashing of teeth, we are left with a loss on the day which takes us just about back to break even again.

Actually, Phil might take issue with including the odds on winner, as the text on his website does say that he wouldn’t personally take a bet at low odds such as that. However, he also points out that many of his subscribers use his selections in their own way, & the horse was posted at odds of “Up to 12/1″, which it certainly was. I have no problem with backing a horse odds on myself, so I will consistently include such horses, as long as they meet his stated odds criteria to qualify.

…and I’m a happy bunny, as the last winner had my money on it from my own selections!

Looks like Phil has perhaps hit a bit of form with PIP. Things were looking a little dodgy early on, with a big presence at Sandown producing just the one winner, Al Kazeem (BSP 3.53), but things got going elsewhere later in the day. Of those, no less than 7 won, as follows: The Cockney Mackem (BSP 2.01); Aneyeforaneye (6.2); Frankies Promise (13.26); Connectivity (2.83); Princely Hero (8.8); Callhimwhatyouwant (3.12); Disclaimer (4.82). Nice to see a mix of “expected” winners plus some bigger prices as well. It should always be the case that betting for consistent profits is a long game, so with today’s result almost pulling the bank back to break even, it will be interesting to see if the overall profit line on the graph can start to rise steadily now for the rest of the trial.

With this number of selections, if the number of winners could just be brought up to a steady 4 or 5 a day, this could be a lovely little bank builder.

It would have been a quite spectacular day, as 2 of the “non-qualifiers” also came home in front – Hot Snap & Improvisation – but a great day for PIP nonetheless, & perhaps the recent reported bad run has come to an end. Let’s hope so.

Initial thoughts

Insider Profit Provider is essentially a fairly simplistic horse racing system based around some specific statistics. The stats can be researched on a number of different websites but they do suggest one as it is very easy to get the relevant data in a user friendly format. When you join up you are given access to their web-site from where you can download the PDF system guide. As mentioned above there is also a football betting system and whilst it can be used on all national leagues i will not be trialling this as part of this review given that the major leagues are coming to the end of the season but will maybe pick this up at a later date.

The horse racing system itself is very well explained in a step by step format and there are clear rules and criteria to be used in order to identify potential bets. The system states that all bets should be placed each way but interestingly they do not specify minimum odds which i find quite surprising. The service also does not recommend a staking plan but just suggests you have one. Having worked through the criteria for a days racing i would suggest you will probably need approx 45 mins to an hour to do this although I am sure it will become easier and faster over time. The other thing about this system is that i imagine it may identify a lot of bets on a daily basis but we will see how this works out once i start using it.

I will start using the system and recording results from Wed 1st May. For the purpose of this review i will take all odds fom Betfair starting price and bet at level 1pt e/w stakes with a starting bank of 500pts.

I have now e-mailed the service four times to get clarification on some of the system criteria and had no response which is very disappointing. Whilst the criteria for finding selections is very straight forward it does take quite a lot of time to do this on a daily basis (60-90 mins). As a result of this whilst I am using the specified system criteria to identify selections I am using the top 50% of their suggested strike rate range to do this (takes 30-45 mins per day) which in theory should increase the system strike rate.

I have e-mailed the service regarding the questions above relating to e/w bet odds and multiple race selections and will update as soon as I have a response.

Well it was the first day of using the system and whilst the system itself is very straight forward the process of actually identifying the selections took a lot longer than i expected, approx 80 mins in total. It also threw out a lot of selections however over 50% of the races had multiple selections (2,3 and 4 in some) so I did not bet on these races which brought the final number of bets down to 7 for the day. All bets are e/w as per the system rules and all bets will be 1pt e/w. Of the 7 races there was one winner but the other 6 didn’t manage a place between them for a loss of -9.8pts on the day.

Indeed, just recently I profited from David Moyes taking over at Manchester United, as did a selection of speedy followers.

But anyway, enough trumpet blowing…

Here are some top tips that will help you to profit from the manager markets.

Stay connected

Breaking news is king when it comes to these bets and if you react quickly enough you can lock in multiple guaranteed profits on a single market.

Monitor virtually any ‘next manager’ market for a few weeks and you’ll see exactly what I mean as the odds invariably bounce around like a yo-yo having an epileptic fit.

The trick then is to latch onto a manager at the start of a rapid descent and then get out again before the odds start to bounce back the other way.

That might sound tricky but when you’re well connected to breaking news it often couldn’t be easier…

I’ll use the David Moyes timeline of events as an example:

10:07am: Moyes available at 7/4 as hopeful Manchester United fans rush to back Jose Mourinho.

10:20am: Sky sources reveal that United will make an appointment in the next few days – this means that somebody has already been lined up which rules out Mourinho who is in talks with Chelsea and points heavily towards Moyes who is out of contract at the end of the season.

10:23am: I back Moyes at 6/4.

10:56am: I lay Moyes at 1.45 to recoup my stake and turn my investment into a no lose bet.

Avoid the hype

While hype is a fantastic trading tool if you get in quickly, it’s absolutely crucial that you don’t pay too much attention to the media frenzy if you’re thinking about placing an outright bet rather than a trade.

Again, just look at a typical next manager market – the chances are you’ll see four or five different names taking over the favouritism before a new manager is appointed and many of those will be odds on at some stage.

Bookmakers are notoriously quick to slash their prices in these markets due to the very real prospect of inside information being at play and that results in plenty of false favourites and ‘good things’ getting beat…

Again, great for trading but extremely dangerous when it comes to outright bets.

My advice…

Stick to smaller stakes on meatier prices rather than big stakes on short prices and ALWAYS lay your selection if it shortens to long odds on, even if just to recoup your stake.

Check the fixture list

Now this one is only applicable to the ‘next manager to leave’ market but it’s crucial so don’t forget it.

Football, as chairman so love to point out after a sacking, is a results business and so if you can pre-determine a sequence of results, you’ll often unearth some big clues as to the identity of the next manager for the chop.

Of course you have to use your noggin here – if a manager is under no pressure whatsoever then the fixtures are irrelevant, regardless of how tricky they are…

However, if you spot a manager just starting to lose his grip (but not so much so that the odds are no good) and he has say, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool as three of his next four games, then you’d be silly not to get a bet on – sure, he might not be sacked after that sequence but his odds will almost certainly be significantly lower.

Other fixtures to look out for include derby matches and relegation ‘six-pointers’ (preferably away from home), basically any game that…

A) They might be hammered in (Man Utd, Man City etc)
B) That will result in major pressure from the fans and the board if they lose

One fixture list to look out for at the start of next season is Newcastle’s – if the Toon Army get off to another bad start, expect Alan Pardew’s head to be firmly on the chopping block.

Know your options

As with a lot of the less traditional markets there are often multiple manager markets that mean the same thing…

For example, right now you can bet on the ‘next permanent Man City manager’ and the ‘Man City manager on the 1st day of the season’…

Both are effectively the same thing but that doesn’t necessarily mean the odds will be the same – indeed, you’d be surprised how much extra profit you can squeeze out of a bet when you combine this principle with a little outside the box thinking.

A good example was when Brendan Rodgers took over as Liverpool manager last summer…

I backed him at 12/1 to be the ‘next Premier League manager to leave’ rather than take the 7/1 in the ‘next Liverpool manager’ market…

Sure, my bet could have been scuppered by a move elsewhere but given it was the middle of the summer, the chances of another manager leaving their post over the course of those few days (I backed Rodgers at a late stage of the hiring process) was very slim.

Back Malky Mackay to be the next Everton manager at 8/1 with Bet365 or Stan James.

The Everton manager saga looks set to be a long running affair and that’s ideal fodder for trading, with prices contracting and extending more often than a set of steroid fuelled biceps.

With that in mind Malky Mackay looks great value at 8/1 and I would expect there to be some sustained support for him at some stage and an opportunity to lay him at much shorter than eights…

He seems to fit the bill perfectly – young, up and coming Scottish manager, just as Moyes was when he went to Everton – and given Cardiff’s slightly wacky owners I could see him jumping ship (he was notably coy when asked the question on Match of the Day recently).

Also attracting my support is the one constant in the market, Roberto Martinez, who has been vying for favouritism ever since Moyes’ departure was announced…

While he’s not currently a huge price, I do fully expect him to trade at significantly shorter at some stage given Wigan’s relegation and, if you get on now, I imagine you’ll be able to lay him back at evens to lock in a no-lose bet sooner rather than later.
