Cash In On A Cupset

| August 28, 2012 | Reply

Not having much luck at the moment are we?!

But hey, if it’s going to go wrong, it may as well go spectacularly wrong – a Placepot with five winners and a fourth place is no more use than one with four losers, an unseated rider and a dead horse.

Fact is that every bettor has losers and every bettor has losing runs…

If you can’t handle that then you can either man up, or quit betting entirely and take up something less demanding – knitting perhaps or keeping goal against Arsenal.

Tonight sees the second round of the League/Milk/Coca Cola/Rumbelows/Carling/I Don’t Care What I’m Called Because I’m A Commercial Whore Cup get underway and, as is always the case, there are bound to be one or two upsets.

Just take a look at these from last year alone…

Brighton 1 Sunderland 0 (AET)
Norwich 0 MK Dons 4
QPR 0 Rochdale 2
Shrewsbury 3 Swansea 1
West Ham 1 Aldershot 2
Scunthorpe 1 Newcastle 2 (AET, so a draw at full time)

With this in mind I’m going to provide you with my thoughts ahead of this evening’s ties which involve Premier League teams…

Take from them what you will but with a wee bit of luck (which you always need when looking for upsets) this could be a very profitable night indeed.

Aston Villa vs. Tranmere

Expect Villa to bounce back with a win here as Paul Lambert attempts to build some momentum.

Verdict: Villa possible acca material at 8/15.

Norwich vs. Scunthorpe

Norwich were soundly thwacked at home by League One opposition at this point last season and they could be at risk again here.

Verdict: Scunthorpe in 90mins at 17/2, the draw at 4/1 and over 3.5 goals at 6/4 could all be worth a second glance.

Nottingham Forest vs. Wigan

Wigan could be up against it here but Forest look too short at 6/4.

Verdict: No bet.

QPR vs. Walsall

Maybe I’m just bitter because they cost me my acca this time last year but it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Rangers flopped against League One opposition again – especially if Jay Bothroyd is anywhere near the starting line-up.

Verdict: 10/1 on a Walsall win is massive and they’re also 6/1 to qualify.

Sheffield Wednesday vs. Fulham

Fulham aren’t great on their travels while Wednesday are unbeaten in quite some time but I think the 10/7 for an away win looks overly generous.

Verdict: Fulham to win at 10/7 and another entry for the acca.

Stevenage vs. Southampton

This could go any which way…

I’m mildly tempted by the 2/1 on Stevenage but, like Villa, Southampton will be desperate to get a win on the board.

Verdict: No bet.

Stoke vs. Swindon

Swindon are a good team and they did very well in this competition last year but Tony Pulis likes to take the cups seriously and for that reason I think Stoke will be too strong here.

Verdict: Stoke in the acca at 3/4.

Sunderland vs. Morecambe

Another manager who likes the cups is Martin O’Neil but 1/5 is no value for a single or an acca bet.

Verdict: No bet.

Swansea vs. Barnsley

Beaten at this stage last year but under new management this, the Swans are a tough one to call.

Barnsley look big at 17/2 but may be a bit too leaky at the back to handle the rampant Welshies.

Verdict: No bet.

West Ham vs. Crewe

West Ham have a big squad and so will probably win this but Big/Fat Sam has never much liked the cups and the 1/3 is scary short.

Verdict: The draw at 9/2 may hold some appeal.

Yeovil vs. West Brom

Yeovil have made their best ever start to a league season, while West Brom under new management are still tough to get a handle on.

Verdict: Home advantage and good form make the 4/1 for a Yeovil win reasonably attractive – no Vicky Pendleton but potentially Laura Trott.

Reading vs. Peterborough

If there’s one team that knows how to score goals its Peterborough and that, combined with a League Cup match against newly promoted Premier League opposition, equals prime Cupset material.

Verdict: Peterborough to win at 7/1.

No concrete stakes here and as I say, make of them what you will, but I’m pretty confident there will be a few gems in among that little lot.

Actually I will advise a stake on the acca (a treble actually) as I rather like it…

Villa, Fulham and Stoke pay out at just over 5/1 so whack a point on, get a pint in, feel free to go for a couple of Cupsets and enjoy!
