Asian Handicaps – A Beginner’s Guide

| September 27, 2010 | 9 Replies

In a nutshell

Asian handicaps are not too different to normal handicaps, in that they give one team a small head-start and adjust the odds accordingly. However, in Asian handicaps the ‘draw’ option is also taken out, thus turning a football match into a two outcome event.

Advantages and disadvantages

This technique is special in that it was actually designed by bettors, for bettors. As a result, there is much better value to be had than when placing a standard ‘match odds’ bet.

As previously mentioned, there are also only ever two selections available in an Asian Handicap – the home team or the away team.

On the negative side, this technique can often look very complicated, especially to inexperienced bettors. It’s in the bookmaker’s interest to direct you towards the poorer value markets, so you are unlikely to find that they’re especially helpful in their explanation of Asian handicaps.

Examples

Asian handicaps work with a ball system. The potential payouts vary depending on this figure.

Example 1:

0 Ball

Bets on Team A –
• Team A win = bet wins.
• Draw = the stake is refunded.
• Team A lose = bet loses.

Bets on Team B –
• Team B win = bet wins.
• Draw = the stake is refunded.
• Team B lose = bet loses.

Example 2:

0, 0.5 Ball

Team giving away a head-start (0, -0.5) –
• Win = bet wins.
• Draw = half the stake is refunded, the other half is classed as a loser.
• Lose = bet loses.

Team receiving the head start (0, +0.5) –
• Win or draw = bet wins.
• Lose = bet loses.

Example 3:

0.5 Ball

Team giving away a head-start (-0.5) –
• Win = bet wins.
• Draw or lose = bet loses.

Team receiving the head start (+0.5) –
• Win or draw = bet wins.
• Lose = bet loses.

Example 4:

0.5, 1.0 Ball

Team giving away a head-start (-0.5, 1.0) –
• Win by two goals or more = bet wins.
• Win by one goal = half the stake wins, the other half is refunded.
• Draw or lose = bet loses.

Team receiving the head start (+0.5, 1.0) –
• Win or draw = bet wins.
• Lose by one goal = half the stake is refunded, the other half is classed as a loser.
• Lose by more than one goal = bet loses.

Example 5:

1.0 Ball

Team giving away a head-start (-1.0) –
• Win by two goals or more = bet wins.
• Win by one goal = the stake is refunded.
• Draw or lose = bet loses.

Team receiving the head start (+1.0) –
• Win or draw = bet wins.
• Lose by one goal = the stake is refunded.
• Lose by more than one goal = bet loses.

Where can I use this technique?

With Asian handicaps becoming more popular all the time, pretty much every bookmaker and betting exchange will now offer the market.

Betting exchanges can provide particularly good value when using this technique, as sites such as Betfair often provide three separate handicaps from which you can choose. In fact, with some of the value on offer when backing Asian handicaps, it’s often a good idea to bet on all three!

where is asian handicap normally on betfair site or any bookies for that matter i cant seem to find it kip

  4. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Kip,

You will need to find the match in question first and then it should be positioned somewhere among the extra markets i.e. next to under/over 2.5 goals etc.

Here’s an example from Victor Chandler: http://www.victorchandler.com/vcbet/en-gb/coupons/show/250187200/240?outcome_id=4825326000&price_decimal=2.16&price_description=2.160&price_id=13545099502

It’s also worth noting that not all bookmakers offer it (especially in lower league matches) and some refer to it as an Asian Line Handicap.

    Regards,
    Matt

i have found it no bother on victor chandler how is it so difficult with most of the other bookies by the way i opened up an account with them no offer of a free bet

Did you open an account via a link in one of my emails? If you did then you should have got a free bet.

There is an awful lot of value built into Asian Handicaps and in all likelihood that’s why they are often tricky to find – bookmakers don’t want you betting on them!

  7. Paul says:

Hi is it possible to place a Asian handicap bet using the victor chandler mobile app, if so can u tell me how please. Many thanks

  8. Matt Houghton Matt Houghton says:

    Hi Paul,

I don’t have the app but I don’t see why not.

Just scroll through the list of markets in the relevant match and if it’s one of them, select it. If it’s not in the list of markets then your best bet is to contact Victor Chandler direct.

    Regards,
    Matt

    Hi Paul, Matt,
I have te Victor Chandlor (now BetVictor) mobile app on my iPhone, and you can place Asian Handicap bets using the app. It is exactly where Matt said , if you select the match / event and then look at the markets listed it will say Asian Handicap or Handicap and then what the handicp is.
    Hope this helps.
    Sanj.
