Profit From Favourites On The Flat

| April 11, 2016 | Reply

A couple of months ago Betting Rant correspondent David Peat gave us a great insight into how to profit from favourites on the All-Weather…

Today he’s back, but this time he’s been digging up some interesting, and potentially very profitable, statistics for the Flat.

Enjoy.

I have always been interested in Maiden races but have never really had a successful angle, however after reading somewhere about the exploits of Luca Cumani in this sphere (both flat and AW) when his horse went off as favourite, I wondered if there were any other profitable trainers under these circumstances.

Using HorseRaceBase I set the following criteria:

  • 2012 onwards
  • Maiden races only
  • Favourite (not joint or co fav)
  • Flat races only

The table below shows the results for this query…

I have taken out non profitable trainers or those with less than eight winners.

Table 1 - Main

However I thought I would have a look at each trainer and see if they had any other profitable angles. You could simply back the above trainers blindly when their horse started favourite in a maiden race and you would have the following results:

Table 2 - Maiden

KEITH DALGLEISH

The trainer has a wonderful strike rate with his favourites however those wishing to be a bit more selective could look at only his runners that race in Scotland…
